Middle School includes 6th Grade, 7th Grade, and 8th Grade. The focus for these students is taking the knowledge and skills they've learned and learning to apply them in new and advanced ways. There is a strong commitment to helping these students prepare for high school.
Our history curriculum provides multiple opportunities for cross curricular teaching. Students are able to apply skills and information from history to their other classes. Our assessments not only focus on traditional assessment by also focus on student expression and choice projects. This allows students to show their knowledge in a method that they feel the most comfortable. 8th graders travel to Gettysburg Battlefield and the United States Holocaust Museum. Classes combine field trips, technology, current events, outside sources and the textbook during the school year.
"The only thing new in the world is the history you don't know."
– Harry S. Truman
Our literature classes are divided into two sections for each grade. This division allows for small group instruction and also the ability to cover the same curriculum but go at the pace best suited for the students in the smaller classes. Each grade level reads at least one novel that is the same for both groups and is not in the textbook. In 7th grade the small groups also read a second novel. The 8th grade curriculum does not have a textbook. We base our year on novels, plays and short stories. Our choices for novels and plays may change, but all meet the standards set forth by our curriculum.
"That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you're not lonely and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald
Math Enrichment class is a part of Holy Redeemer’s middle school math curriculum. This course utilizes the STEM skills students learn in their assigned math (and science) class as well as additional concepts to be investigated in class. Students explore math concepts through hands-on projects, application, and problem solving. These projects incorporate real world math skills, and students work individually, with partners, or in small groups throughout the year.
"The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics."
– Paul Halmos
“We all have a vocation. We believe that God has placed us in this life to fill a special need that no one else can accomplish.”
– St. Francis de Sales
Our middle school science program adheres to rigorous Archdiocese of Washington academic standards. Students explore God's creation by reading scientific texts, watching educational media, and completing hands-on labs. Students build an accurate knowledge base of science topics and also apply what they've learned to solve real world problems. 6th grade focuses on Earth and Space Science, 7th grade focuses on Life Science, and 8th grade focuses on Physical Science. Students also learn to write about science and integrate math with science in preparation for high school.
"Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.”
– Carl Sagan
100%
acceptance into our Archdiocese of Washington Catholic high schools
A large part of our senior year at Holy Redeemer is preparing our graduates for high school. Each fall our local Catholic high schools visit our school to speak to the 7th and 8th graders. During the spring of the 7th grade year students take a practice High School Placement test. The High School Placement test (HSPT) is given each fall to 8th graders who are applying to a local Catholic high school. Every 8th grader applying to a Catholic high school has opportunities to spend a day at their possible choices. These days give our students a chance to experience a day in high school. Our administration also offers the opportunity to participate in mock interviews so that students are prepared for their admissions visit and interview. We are so proud of how our administration and staff work closely with our students to help them prepare for high school, scholarship opportunities and the world beyond Holy Redeemer School.
